MOVING GUIDE AND USEFUL LINKS

Preparation for Moving – once you have given notice

Moving Transport:

Decide how you are going to move everything and if you’re going to use a professional moving company get 3 or 4 quotes.

Your Belongings:

Spring clean and sort out any items you no longer want.  Larger items can be removed by your local council (there is a charge). Start packing stuff you do not use frequently.

Change of Address:

Create a Key Contacts Checklist - some contracts require a month’s notice. Don’t forget the DVLA – your licence and car, TV Licence, Store Cards, Broadband and look into setting up a postal redirection for any post that slips through. See Useful Links list below.

Arrangements for Child and/or Pet Care:

Not only can children and pets be a distraction but it's also an unsafe environment. Arrange for someone to help look after them on the moving day.

The Week Before you Move

Confirm Date and Times:

Confirm dates and times of moving day with all parties.

Utilities, etc.

Get services and utilities organised, eg. gas, electric, water and most importantly your broadband so you have something good to watch when you crash out at the end of the moving day!

Packing Up:

Finish packing the rest, making sure you mark each box with which room it's for.  Make an Essentials Box that travels with you to include; kettle, tea and coffee, milk, toilet roll, snacks, phone charger, small radio, packing/sticky tape, pens, scissors and takeaway menus for your new area.

Food & Consumables:

Try to use up your perishable foods.  Saves money and is less to pack, plus it's easier to clean kitchen cupboards, fridges, etc.

Home Contents Insurance:

It may be the last thing on your mind, but ensure a policy starts from the day you move so your contents are covered.

Overnight Bag:

Pack an overnight bag as if you’re going away for the weekend, it saves trying to find clothes and toiletries. It sounds obvious but it saves the stress of trying to find your toothbrush, etc and having to rummage through all the boxes – it always ends up being the least accessible or last box!

On Moving Day

Meter Readings:

Before you leave, get a final meter reading of all your metered services and call to inform the relevant suppliers so you can settle the final balance and close the account. Also remember to take all the appropriate meter readings at your new property.

Before Leaving:

Have a good check around in cupboards, etc for anything you may have missed.  Make sure you leave the property in a clean state.

First Things to Unpack:

Put your bed together and make it first – it will be the last thing you want to do at the end of the day. Then move on to the Kitchen and Bathroom essentials.

Money:

Make sure you have a little cash ready for when you order your take away.
